Perth Metropolitan Area

About Us

Perth's most rigorous tutoring network. Three years, hundreds of families, zero lock-in.

Our story

A simple idea,
done properly.

Narwhal Tutoring was founded by Noah, a Perth Modern School graduate with a 99.5 ATAR, now studying Mechatronics Engineering at the University of Sydney. After finishing school, he noticed that many high-achieving peers had exactly what younger students needed — a genuine, deep understanding of the subjects they'd just studied. But few became tutors, put off by the difficulty of finding students and the shortcomings of traditional agencies: poor pay, inflexible locations, rigid scheduling.

The vision was simple: build a distributed network where recently graduated high achievers connect directly with students near them. No agency overhead. No enforced locations. Excellent tutors, well-paid and well-supported, delivering personalised 1-on-1 lessons.

Three years on, Narwhal has grown to 17 carefully selected tutors across the Perth Metropolitan area. We are growing every year.

Selection standards

A 99+ ATAR gets you an interview.
Not a job.

Every Narwhal tutor is a recent high school graduate — someone who sat the same exams your child is preparing for, under the same WA curriculum. They know the content intimately, they know the exam format, and they know what it takes to do well.

Our average ATAR is over 99. We have two tutors with a perfect 99.95 and three more with 99.9. Many come from Perth Modern School; others are high performers from across the metropolitan area.

A high ATAR alone does not earn a place on our platform. Every applicant is personally interviewed by the directors. We test whether they can explain content clearly under questioning, whether they are patient and friendly, and whether they carry the professionalism our families expect. We regularly turn away applicants with outstanding scores who cannot demonstrate genuine depth.

Teaching method

Two steps. Proven results.

The same method our tutors used to achieve their own results.
01

Build a strong foundation

Real understanding before anything else. Through discussion, visualisation, and worked examples, tutors establish the conceptual foundation that makes everything click.

02

Do the work

Understanding alone doesn't produce results — repetition does. Targeted problem sets, past papers, and exam-style questions until the approach becomes instinctive.

Questions

For parents
How does the free trial work?
Every new household gets one free 1-hour lesson with the tutor of their choice. There is no obligation to continue — but almost all families who try us do. If you proceed, simply purchase a lesson pack afterwards.
Where do lessons take place?
Lessons are 1-on-1 and in-person at your home. Your tutor travels to you. Online lessons are also available for families who prefer them or who live outside a tutor's travel range.
How do I find the right tutor?
Use our tutor finder to filter by subject, suburb, and availability. Each profile shows the tutor's ATAR, subjects, and coverage areas. You can message them before committing to anything.
How often are lessons?
That is up to you and your tutor. Most families start with one lesson per week and adjust from there. There are no lock-in commitments on either side.
What if I want to change tutors?
No problem at all. Call us at 0421 286 031 and we will help you find a better fit. Any unused lesson hours carry over.
Are travel costs extra?
No — travel is included in the lesson fee. Each tutor specifies which suburbs they cover; you can see this on their profile before you make contact.
For tutor applicants
Who can apply?
Recent high school graduates or current university students with strong academic results and the communication skills to match. We recruit from Perth Modern and high performers from schools across the metropolitan area.
What is the interview process?
After applying, we will invite you to an interview with one of the directors. We will ask you to explain content from your subject areas to assess your depth of knowledge and how clearly you communicate. A high ATAR is the starting point — genuine understanding and professionalism determine whether you get through.
What are the hours like?
Flexible. Beyond the minimum hours, you decide how many students you take on and when you are available. It is designed to fit comfortably around university study.
How much does it pay?
Between $50 and $60 per hour depending on experience — one of the most competitive rates for tutors in Perth. We pay well deliberately, to attract and retain the best people.
How do I apply?
Create an account, verify your email, then click Become a Tutor in the navigation menu. You will be guided through the application process from there.
